This is an excellent honing steel, but it does not sharpen a knife. It will straighten the teeth on a knife that is already sharp. This its only job and it does it well. It's designed for Forschner, Henkels or Sabatier European type knifes. I would never use it on my Japanese knifes, but it does what it's intended to do and should last a lifetime. Just remember that it's a steel and not a sharpener.
