Silver Stag Knives: Silver Stag Hunter, Crown Series Tool Steel, SS-SSH60
This Silver Stag Hunter is a sturdy bowie style knife that features a 6" upswept fixed blade made of 80CrV2 tool steel, with a Rockwell hardness of 58, and engine turned (jeweled) flats - a process that involves pressing a wire mesh bit on the blade flats to create indented swirls that assist the blades in retaining oil for corrosion control. The Hunter has stick tang construction with unique antler crown handle and a metal bolster. A high quality leather snap sheath is included. The Silver Stag Hunter has an approximate overall length of 11.5". Made in the USA.
From the Silver Stag website regarding the steel: For many years we have been manufacturing this series with 1095 HC spring tool steel. 1095 HC steel is excellent for toughness, ability to take and hold an edge, and ease to re-sharpen. The only negative is it is very susceptible to rust. We recently discovered a new tool steel that has the great properties and characteristics of 1095, but is less susceptible to corrosion. 80CrV2 has received great reviews in the "custom" knife making industry. 80CrV2 Steel is incredibly tough, easy to forge, and will take and hold an edge. In addition, 80CrV2 retains some flex after the steel has been hardened to a 58 Rockwell. ...We recommend that you keep the blades oiled. The blades will spot, discolor, and rust if put away wet or are exposed to damp conditions for extended periods of time.
All antler handles will vary in coloration and surface character, which is part of the uniqueness of natural handle materials.
